Sykes- I always said I wanted to finish my career at my hometown team

Dewsbury Rams halfback Paul Sykes has signed a new deal at the club for the 2021 season.

The experienced player has had a few years at the club now, and although there are some people expecting him to retire. The 38 year old feels as fit and as strong as ever and is ready for another tough year in the Championship.

On re-signing for the club, Sykes said: “It’s a no brainier really, I’ve been here a few years now it’s my hometown club and I always said I’d like to finish my career here whenever that may be haha.’

As with fellow halfback Liam Finn, Sykes brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the side. He’s able and willing to pass on any tips to any young player who is still learning the game.

He continued: “If there’s any knowledge that I can pass on to the young lads Im always there, I’m a big believer in skill and the fundamentals of the game there’s always room for improvements.”

After the 2020 season was curtailed all the players want to get back playing and Sykes is no different.

“I am chomping at the bit to be fair, I’ve still got the same passion and hunger for playing as I did 20 odd years ago. So I can’t wait to get started again.”

As with the rest of the players Sykes believes a major factor in why the Rams looked good in 2020 was due to the team’s close bond. He expects that atmosphere to carry on in 2021.

He said: “Yes it was great we had a good start and was enjoying our footy, we all get on well and love being around each other and if you have that then that’s half the battle going forward.

“Our pre season was one of the best we’ve had too everybody put the hard yards in throughout and it showed the way we started 2020.”

Finally Sykes left the following message for the fans.

“The fans have been awesome throughout my time here obviously it’s been tough times for everyone but I’m sure we’ll make up for lost time in 2021! UTR.”
