Greenwood: Reviews Oldham victory

Dewsbury Rams Lee Greenwood was proud of his team’s performance as they beat Oldham at Bower Fold on Sunday 24-6.

It was the third win on the trot for Greenwood’s men who have made an impressive start to the season.

On the victory over Oldham, Greenwood said: “We would have taken a one point win, we aren’t getting too far ahead of ourselves, every game is a slug fest at the moment, apart from if you are playing on a 3G pitch, they are all heavy and this was no different.

“It took us a while to get going, whether that was an attitude thing I am not sure, we got off to a slow start but then got going. Generally we defended well throughout, the one try they did score came from us making an error 10 meters out from a scrum, they got the ball and scored directly from it.

“Apart from that they didn’t cause us too many problems, through the first half we worked our way back in to it. We defended well and stuck in there without being brilliant. We then scored our own try and Paul put through a brilliant touchline conversion to leave it at 6-6.

“With the pitch being on a slight slope we were coming up it in the first half and weren’t brilliant, however we scored without doing too much else. I wanted us to get off to a better start in the second period, and I thought for the first fifteen minutes we were very good and that is maybe where the game was won.”

Greenwood and his team knew that they weren’t going to be in for an easy ride against Matt Diskin’s Oldham and it certainly was a tough test.

Greenwood continued: “It’s not easy coming here and cracking the defence, it’s about being patient and taking your opportunities when they come. There was a bit of a patch when we gave a few penalties away and gave them a chance. However I thought we defended well and didn’t let them either re-take the lead or close the gap, I thought we were good value for the win.

“We spoke about getting two out of three wins being a good start and winning three out of four being a very good start and that is what it has become.

“Out of the four performances we have played in this has been the worst, however we defended really well and for 95% of the time the lads did exactly what we asked of them and we can’t ask for more than that. This isn’t an easy place to come, they will pick some points up here, I’m just glad it’s not against us.

“It took 70 minutes of hard graft to really open them up a few times and that’s what the good teams do, they just keep going and that’s what we want to turn into.”
