GRASSROOTS: Latest update on local teams

MIRFIELD STAGS

Whilst sport gives us all highs & ecstasy it can also provide controversy & frustration  – such must be the emotions at Mirfield Stags right now.Only weeks after the highest point of their history when they won the Yorkshire Cup they now find themselves expelled from this season’s National Cup & next season’s Yorkshire Cup.

BARLA have yet to issue a statement it would appear that Mirfield are guilty of fielding more ex professionals than regulations allow in the recent county final. The frustration for the Stags is that they claim to have queried a rather grey area rule before the big day.No doubt clarification will be issued shortly but Kells were awarded a walk over in their scheduled first round National cup tie last Saturday.

The situation engulfing Mirfield meant that Hanging Heaton were left to fly the local flag when they took on Wigan St Cuthberts. Despite home advantage it was defeat for Heaton by 20 points to 6.
