MATCH REPORT: Dewsbury Rams 24-25 Featherstone Rovers

Dewsbury Rams were narrowly defeated by fellow Championship side Featherstone Rovers on Sunday afternoon at the Tetley’s Stadium.

The Rams lost 24-25 on the day with Dane Chisholm scoring a drop goal to win the game for the Rovers. The Fixture started in a tight fashion and didn’t really get going until the 12th minute when Paul Sykes kicked over a penalty to put the Rams ahead.

Eight minutes later the Rams extended their lead when Micheal Knowles smashed his way through the Featherstone defence to score. Sykes converted the kick to add the extra two points to put the Rams 8-0 up.

Featherstone kept battling away and eventually got their try when Ash Golding slid over from close range in the corner. Dane Chisholm missed his conversion attempt meaning the score now stood at 8-4.

Just seven minutes later Featherstone were level, Alex Sutcliffe went over the whitewash for the Rovers to score the next try. Once again Chishom missed his conversion attempt and the score stood at 8-8.

The visitors then went in front on the 38th minute as Callum McLelland scored his try of the afternoon as he dipped a shoulder and found a gap in the Rams defence to score. Chisholm again missed his kick and that left the tally at half time Dewsbury Rams 8-12 Featherstone Rovers.

The first points in the second half were scored in the 48th minute as a tip tackle was given against the Rams, Chisholm scored the penalty to extend Featherstone’s score by two points.

Ten minutes later the Rams got a try and what a try it was, Paul Sykes produced a pin point kick to Dale Morton who leaped high in the air to then crash down over the line to score a superb try. Sykes then missed his conversion attempt which meant the Rams were still trailing behind the Rovers by two points.

Four minutes later Featherstone extended their lead by scoring the next try, Wellington Albert diving over the line to grab his try for the day. Chishom this time converted the kick to take the tally 12-20 to Featherstone.

The Rams never say die attitude shone through again as on the 66th minute Nyle Flynn blasted through the Rams defence to score a great try under the posts. Sykes converted his kick to once again take the Rams within two points.

Featherstone again pulled away when they scored a try on the 70th minute when Conor Carey went over the line in the corner, Chisholm missed his kick to mean the score went to 18-24 to Featherstone.

Dewsbury got a late try on the 74th minute when Dom Speakman dipped his way over the whitewash to score. Sykes made the conversion attempt to put the scores all level going into the final five minutes.

That five minutes turned into one of the most crazy so far this season, Dewsbury turned down two drop goal kicks from two sets, and then the inevitable drop goal from Featherstone came as Dane Chisholm scored with his drop goal attempt.

The score ended 24-25 to Featherstone, next week the Rams are playing Batley Bulldogs at Mount Pleasant.
