Heckford goes on loan to York

Dewsbury Rams can now confirm that Lewis Heckford has gone on a one month loan deal to York City Knights.

Heckford who signed for the Rams permanently in the winter has found game time tough to come by and it is felt by head coach Lee Greenwood that some regular game time at the Knights will be good for Heckford.

On the decision to loan him to York, Greenwood said: “With the addition of Liam, it pushed Lewis down the pecking order slightly. We have Brown, Sykes and Finn all in that position plus Lewis, and it has been hard for him to push himself into the position.

“He does need to play, and it isn’t to say Lewis is a bad player because he really isn’t, far from it in fact it’s just we have plenty of people in that position with having a big squad. York are in a position where there squad is smaller and he has only one halfback in Ben Cockayne and even then he’s not a traditional halfback. Beyond that they haven’t really got anyone in that position so they were after someone who could come in and cover short term.

“The deal works well for all parties where if he plays well at York he’ll stay there and then we’ll review it and see if he can come in and be a contender for us.”
