Dewsbury Rams have signed Tom Garratt for the 2019 season, the prop forward has signed on the dotted line and is the latest winter signing.

The 24 year old had spent some time in Super League club Huddersfield Giants academy, and since then has played the majority of his career within the amateur game, particularly boyhood club Siddal. Even though Garratt admits himself moving to the Rams wasn’t in his plans, he is delighted to have signed for the club.

He said: “I played for a short while at the Huddersfield Giants academy when I was younger, I have been coached by Lee and Gareth before at Siddal and Calderdale College. They got the job here and asked if I wanted to be involved and they wanted to give me a shot so I bit there hand off for it.

“I didn’t know much and to be honest I had set my stall out that I was going to be playing the rest of my days at Siddal which I was fine with, it’s my boyhood club and so I love the club. However when Lee asked me to come here and this opportunity came up it was one I just couldn’t turn down.

“I wasn’t really thinking about the next step, I had just come back from Australia and I was ready to play for siddal again, so as I said I couldn’t really turn this opportunity down and if I had of done, I probably would have regretted it for the rest of my life.”

Having known the Rams head coach in the past, he knows how Lee Greenwood likes to play the game.

He commented: “I feel like it does help, it isn’t a new brand of rugby that I have to get used to, if I were having to get used to a new team as well as a new coach it might be a bit more difficult, but I know all the moves because they are the same moves we were playing at college so I know what the plan is.

“I feel like i can bring that physical play to the pitch, I work hard on and off the field in the gym, and I prefer conditions like we had against Batley and I though I took some strong carries, but I can always get better.”
