Grassroots: Ratcliffe hails Thornhill display as title run-in intensifies

Thornhill Trojans head coach James Ratliffe has hailed the effort from his players following Saturday’s win away at Skirlaugh.

The Trojans trailed at half-time but produced a superb display following the restart to keep their opponents scoreless and emerge big winners.

“I’ve been here many times as a player and a coach and it’s not easy to come by wins, and I thought the lads did a thoroughly good job,” Ratcliffe told the Trojans Facebook page.

“I think we gifted them points in the first half but we corrected that at half-time and we changed the way we were playing to keep them scoreless in the second half.

“We knew we’d have lads missing, but we also have lads who are capable of filling spots and what that’s now done is create massive competition for places.

“These lads put their hands up to play and it will stand them in good stead for the matches ahead.”

The Trojans sit two points clear of Leigh Miners Rangers at the top of National Conference League Division One, with seven matches left to play.

“We have seven cup finals to come and if we keep playing like that then we won’t have to worry about anything,” added Ratcliffe.

“But we can’t drop our guard and we have to ensure we turn up with the right attitude.”
